How to get started with SIP trunking

SIP Trunking (Session Initiation Protocol Trunking) is a cloud-based method for connecting your on-premises PBX (phone system) to the public phone network (PSTN) using internet protocols (VoIP services) instead of traditional phone lines.

How It Works🔧

  1. SIP Protocol initiates, manages, and ends calls—including voice, video, and messaging—over Internet Protocol (IP).
  2. Trunking merges multiple virtual “lines” into a single logical connection—known as a SIP trunk—allowing numerous concurrent calls.
  3. A Session Border Controller (SBC) sits at your network edge to manage security, call routing, encryption, and interoperability with your PBX.

Configuring Your SIP Accounts

After signing up with CommPeak and getting your SIP account credentials, your next step is registering your SIP account in CommPeak Softphone, a third-party application, or with your IP phone to make your first call.

TIP

You can also use the built-in CommPeak Softphone with your JWT-enabled SIP accounts to place calls right from your browser. You can read more in the Built-in Softphone for JWT-Enabled SIP Accounts article.

Managing VoIP Services in CommPeak Portal

VoIP services, or Voice over Internet Protocol services, refer to a technology that allows users to make voice calls using a broadband internet connection instead of a traditional phone line. VoIP converts voice signals into digital data packets and transmits them online.

Refer to the VoIP Services page that provides a comprehensive guide on how to start with managing Voice over IP (VoIP) services directly from your CommPeak Portal account.
